Today is truly a day to celebrate here at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  With numbers being down for all shows like ours, we were a little disappointed.  However, what we lacked in numbers, we made up for in quality.  The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic was down about 100 head from last year.  However, our total sales grossed the same as last year, proving that quality makes a statement.  For that, we would like to thank the consignors and buyers, without their hard work, the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic would not exist.  We had a record setting number of registered buyers this year from 30 states across the nation.  With youth being the future growth of the beef industry, the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic held its First Annual Judging Contest attracting 176 participants from five different states.

None of us can believe how fast the week has gone.  We are very excited about all how great this week has gone, and also very excited about all the ideas we have for next year’s Classic.  However, the week is not quite over yet.  Tomorrow, the Junior Show will start at 8:00 a.m.

Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic
Wednesday February 20, 2008

Bags were packed and trailers loaded as cattlemen from across the Midwest made their way to Kearney for the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  The Classic got off to a record breaking start yesterday with the Working Dog and Ranch Horse events.  Today prevailed to be no different with the high quality of Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red Angus events.

The second day of the 2008 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic started out with the Horned Herefords, and it was obvious that they were all in it to win.  The quality the Hereford consignors brought this year was outstanding, and it showed in Judge, Troy Thomas’ face as he was faced with the decision of which animal to name Champion.  After a lot of consideration, Champion Hereford Bull went to Lot 8, consigned by Valley Creek Ranch of Fairbury, NE and later sold to Cristina Kranz of Eddyville, NE for $2,750.  The excitement from the buyers kept the Hereford’s Auctioneer, Jim Birdwell of Fletcher, OK, on his toes the entire sale.  Reserve Champion Hereford Bull went to Lot 3, consigned by JC Cattle Company of Junction City, NE and sold to Terry Magarin of Holstein, NE for $3,600. The Hereford Bull Sale Average was $2,313.

There is a special class in the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Jr. Show reserved for heifers that were bought on any of the breed sales throughout the week.  These young showmen have the opportunity to write a letter to the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic of how there heifer did throughout the summer and get $100 back off their purchase at the next year’s Classic, and the Junior Showmen had some excellent Breeding Heifer prospects to pick from today.  The Champion Hereford Heifer was Lot 36, consigned by Young Cattle Company of Minonk, IL and sold to Ashley Miller of Atlanta, IL for $2,050.  The Reserve Champion Hereford Heifer was Lot 35, consigned by the Lambert Family of Chadron, NE and sold to Eldon Snoke of Humboldt, NE for $1,300.  High selling Hereford of the day was Lot 21, consigned by Stangle Herefords of Marsland, NE and sold to Don Klein of Roseland, NE for $3,750.  The Hereford Heifer Sale Average was $1,713.

Mr. Thomas’ hard choices didn’t end with the Horned Hereford Breed.  He still had two more breeds ahead of him and the Polled Hereford Breed brought some tough competition as well.  The Champion Polled Hereford Bull was Lot 3, consigned by Jensen Bros of Courtland, KS and sold to Gary Dorrell of Highland, KS for $2,800.  The Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Bull was a substitute for Lot 20, also consigned by Jensen Bros and sold to Dunae Windhorst of Syracuse, NE for $2,700.  The Polled Hereford Sale Average for the bulls was $2,286.

The females ruled the sale with their high sale average of $3,014 today.  Auctioneer, Jim Birdwell, barely had a chance to breath between the Horned and Polled Hereford Sales.  The Champion Polled Hereford Heifer was Lot 33, consigned by Blueberry Hill Farms of Norfolk, NE and sold to Mike Sorensen and Shamrock Cattle Co of Greenfield, IA for $6,500, making her the high-selling animal for the Polled Hereford Breed.  The Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Heifer was lot 32, consigned by S&S Polled Herefords of Guide Rock, NE and sold to David Spencer of Gibbon, NE for $2,750.  The Polled Hereford Sale Average for the Heifers was $3,157.

The audience removed their hats as they took a moment of silence in memory of Travis Pieper.  Travis passed away as a result of a car accident a few weeks ago.  The Pieper family played a big part in getting the Red Angus Breed involved in the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic.  Travis Pieper will be greatly missed and we will all keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.  In memorial of Travis Pieper an extra lot has been added to the Royal Ice Sale, which will be held on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m.  All proceeds will go towards the NCC Travis Pieper Memorial Scholarship.

Troy Thomas of Harrold, SD was faced with yet another hard decision as he was also the judge for the Red Angus today.  The Champion Red Angus Bull was Lot 7, consigned by Solution Genetics of Cushing, IA and sold to Jeff Thole of Lycing, KS for $4,800.  The Reserve Champion Red Angus Bull was Lot 15, consigned by Solution Genetics and sold to Glasscock and Tomasic of Pilot Point, TX for $9,750, making him the high-selling animal of the Red Angus Breed.  The Red Angus Bulls had a Sale Average of $3,710.

The Champion Red Angus Heifer was Lot 36, also consigned by Solution Genetics and sold to Edward Spencer of Gibbon, NE for $5,250.  Kyle Gilchrist of Douds, IA took over as Auctioneer for the Red Angus Sale.  The Reserve Champion Red Angus Heifer was Lot 20, consigned by Bullis Creek Ranch of Wood Lake, NE and sold to High Caliber Genetics for $3,200.  The Red Angus Heifers had a sale average of $2,900.  The Red Angus Sale made a wonderful end to wonderful second day at the Classic as people filtered out of the Ag Pavilion and into the Exposition Building to gather with friends to celebrate another great day here at the Classic.

Thursday will be another busy for the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Staff, Consignors, and Buyers.  We will start the day with the Angus Show beginning at 8:00 a.m. followed by the Simmental, Charolais, and Braunvieh shows.  After the shows have wrapped up for the day, the four breed sales will begin at 1:00 p.m.  The Balancer Futurity Parade will take place at 6:00 p.m., where they will choose the Futurity winner for the next day.  The Royal Ice sale begins at 7:30 and will be followed by our Classic Barn Party.
